June 19 – Meditating on God’s Word

This devotional series offers less content but more opportunity for you to reflect, contemplate, and pray through the short Scriptures we offer. It is an opportunity to help us slow down and enjoy time in the presence of God. It is an exercise in listening with the intent of hearing from God through His Word and by His Spirit. Here is the passage for the week:

Isaiah 6:1-8, In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.” Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.” Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

Prayer:Lord, may I capture the vision of your glorious holiness as Isaiah did. May it humble me. May it convict me. May it make me cry out for forgiveness. May I receive your cleansing and know that my sins have been atoned for. May my ultimate response to your holy glory and my forgiveness be to raise my hand and loudly declare, ‘Send me.’ Amen.”

June 20 – Meditating on God’s Word

Isaiah 6:1-2, In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.

Write out the Scripture. (As it is or in your own words.)

“In the year of King Uzziah’s death, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: with two they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew.”

Observe what it is saying. (Answer the who, what, when, where, why, and how questions)

During a national crisis when the strong and long reigning King Uzziah died, Isaiah received this vision. It was of the Lord as the glorious King highly exalted with His presence filling the temple. Even the heavenly seraphim, described as living creatures in Revelation, had to cover their faces and feet in the presence of God’s holy glory.

Relate it to your life. (Connect how this Scripture speaks into your life today.)

I shudder to think how I fail to comprehend and appreciate God’s sovereign glory that surpasses all. There is no comparison. If heaven’s beings have to hide themselves in the presence of God, what does that say about how I should humbly respond to God’s holiness?

Do something. (Pray it. Live it. Act on it.)

“Father in heaven, help me to see your glory. There’s no one like You. You rise far above all things. May I not casually come before You but humble myself as I worship in Your glorious presence. Amen.”

June 21 – Meditating on God’s Word

Isaiah 6:3-4, And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.

Write out the Scripture.

“And they were calling to one another: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.’” When they spoke, the whole temple shook and was filled with smoke.”

Observe what it is saying.

Yesterday we saw that the temple was filled with the train of His robe and today the earth is filled with His glory. This is heaven’s revelation concerning God’s unique and superior attribute of holiness. Though we may refuse to acknowledge it, His glory is everywhere. The heavenly beings’ declaration of the Lord’s holiness is so powerful that it should shake us!

Relate it to your life.

We get a wonderful glimpse of the Lord’s holy glory through the majesty of creation and the beauty of every life transformed by the grace of God.

Do something.

“Father, I fall to my knees in awe of Your majesty and beauty. There’s no one like You. Amen.”

June 22 – Meditating on God’s Word

Isaiah 6:5, “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”

Write out the Scripture.

“’Woe to me!’ I cried out. ‘I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.’”

Observe what it is saying.

Isaiah was overcome and undone at this glorious vision of God. He was convicted of his sin and the people’s sin. They hadn’t been thinking and speaking adequately of God’s holy glory.

Relate it to your life.

When I see with the eyes of my heart the glory of God, I will be humbled and convicted of my inadequate thoughts and words to comprehend and communicate His magnificent majesty.

Do something.

“Father, woe to me! I haven’t adequately declared Your holy glory to Your people! Amen.”

June 23 – Meditating on God’s Word

Isaiah 6:6-7, Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”

Write out the Scripture.

“One of the seraphim flew to me with a hot coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. He touched my mouth and said, ‘See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.’”

Observe what it is saying.

Isaiah had confessed his sin, and in response, he was given this image of how his unclean lips were forgiven. His specific confession brought him cleansing right where he needed it.

Relate it to your life.

The more specific I am in my confession, the more confidence I can have that my sin is forgiven.

Do something.

“Father, help me to precisely confess my sins to You. May I listen to the Holy Spirit’s conviction, humbly admit my wrongdoing, and receive Your forgiveness. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

June 24 – Meditating on God’s Word

Isaiah 6:8, Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

Write out the Scripture.

“Then I heard the Lord say, ‘Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’”

Observe what it is saying.

When we’ve seen the holy glory of the Lord, been convicted and cleansed of our sin, then we should expect that God’s plan includes sending us out as His disciple-makers. If we’re truly appreciative of our forgiveness then we’ll have the same obedient response as Isaiah did.

Relate it to your life.

Since I’m totally cleansed from my sin, my thankful response is to say, “Here am I. Send me!”

Do something.

“Father, Your glory is more than we can behold. It illuminates our sin so that we cry out in heartfelt confession. Thank You for Jesus’ redemption. Send me out to tell the story! Amen.”
